Looking for before and after home renovations with cost? Want to renovate your house?  You’re in the right place.

Whether you’re guesstimating a project cost or already in the thick of a gut remodel, we’re here to help.  Here is the lowdown of the cost of renovating our 100 year old house.

We’ll break things down by room, show a before and after, and give you an estimated total plus a summary of what we fixed.

Things to know that influence our renovation costs:

  • Our home is a two family house in New Jersey.  We’ve renovated from 2016 (at purchase) through today, 2023.  Prices have changed significantly during the last 7 years.  As in, the last time I bought a bucket of compound, I nearly hurled.
  • Our second floor apartment is approximately 1,000 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 1 bath.
  • Our first floor apartment is approximately 1,200 square feet with 3 bedrooms and 1 bath, with a bonus basement room and 2nd bathroom.

I hope for your sake that you have less to fix than we have over the years!

We also hope that by sharing our renovation costs, you’ll be better equipped to estimate your own.

Without further ado – enjoy our before and after home renovations – with cost.

Before and After Home Renovations With Cost – Is It Worth It?

Big question – is it worth renovating a house?

We have concrete evidence to answer, yes.

Thanks to twice refinancing our home (once to get out of PMI following our 2nd floor renovation, and once to take advantage of the basement-bargain interest rates of 2020), we have proof in the pudding of our appraisals.

All totaled, our renovations have cost about $115,000.

And our home’s value has increased by almost $350,000.

So yes, we’ve spent a lot of money renovating our house.

And yes, we have enjoyed a skyrocketing real estate market since we bought our house in 2016.

All these powers combined mean that, lucky for us, the sweat equity is paying off in the value of our home.  We are most grateful that our efforts seem to be worth it so far.

Also… we’re really, really tired.  I think we’ll take a break this spring/summer and have a baby to relax for a while.

…LOL!

We hope these before and after home renovations (with cost) will help inform your home’s remodeling adventures. See you next time at OTF!
